I finally was able to get Premiere Pro, as well as many other pieces of software! I only know what 2 out of the 7 apps do, but that's totally cool -- most of them are unneeded. Now that my computer is definitely ready I can start experimenting with the software rather than spending multiple hours reading tutorials. Huge shoutout to Mr. Jahnigen for helping me get all these apps and for saving me a lot of time and money.
There's nothing new to report but I am meeting with my out of school mentor on Monday to discuss some general things as well as to start working with audio equipment.

I almost forgot to mention that I've also been working on a script for the documentary. It's a little hard to try and nail down everything that will be covered in the film as I'm not sure what type of answers I will get from the interviewees, but I'm working on the Introduction, main background info of each of the activist movements, and questions. For my questions I'm going to have main ones that everyone will be asked (for example: "Why did you become an activist?" and "What methods did your movement use to spread your message?"). There will also be additional questions tailored to each of the interviewees to shake things up a bit.
The one thing I'm not sure how to approach yet is narration. I don't think my voice is right for the role, so I'm trying to see if anyone else I know would be willing to do it. If not, that's okay! I just know that I would love narration as I don't want my audience to be stuck reading text the whole time. Lastly, I'm trying to figure out the images I will be using in the documentary. I want to include newspaper headlines, and definitely photos of both well-known demonstrations and grassroots efforts. I need to figure out the legal things like copyrights. If possible, I definitely want to include some fitting music from the decades. No, that doesn't mean for the 90s that Nirvana and the Spice Girls will be blaring in the background. I want to include artists such as Bob Dylan and John Lennon as their lyrics and style emphasized the political and social changes of the time. I'm pretty happy because my line of interviewees is starting to come together!! I have people for the 60s, 70s, and 80s (ish). I also have someone I will be interviewing to get some general info on student activism. And, Congressman Anthony Brown has agreed to be interviewed! I'm having a little trouble finding people who advocated against Apartheid, but I still have time to figure it out. If I have to -- and if possible -- I may be able to video message others who live far away. I've also been watching YouTube videos on how to use Premiere Pro. Unfortunately, my progress in actually getting the software has been delayed, but I figure it doesn't hurt to become familiar with it beforehand.
Not too long ago I was really stressed about this project -- in the summer I tend to overthink things as there's not too much for me to occupy myself with if that makes any sense. But now, I feel so much more in control of things and am super excited to continue working on this project! So I've been doing more historical research, and I have a basic idea of what I'm covering for the documentary. I've also started to get contacts for potential activists to be interviewed. Unfortunately, when asking people if they have any interviewee suggestions, they are only connecting me with those who were involved with Civil Rights demonstrations. Although it's good information to have, I really want to focus on other topics as well. However, I still have plenty of time to find other activists! I've also started to contact politicians. I am currently still trying to figure out the video software. I hope to still purchase Premiere Pro but am excited to connect with an IT expert who can point me in the right direction, as well.
Well, it's been about a week since school ended, so it seems like a pretty good time to get started on my Fellows Project. I'm going to download Adobe Premiere Pro today and see what I have to do funds-wise. However, when looking to purchase the production software, I noticed that for students it is around the same cost to buy Premiere Pro alone for $20.99 per month and the discounted bundle for students that includes all Adobe apps for $19.99. I'll have to check it out.
Today I'm also going to reach out to my outside mentor Vicky Bruce to see if she can think of any potential student-activists to contact. Because she has made multiple political documentaries, I know she'll have an idea of where to start. Lastly, I'm going to start organizing my thoughts a little more. My project and the material I'm working with has many specifics so I need to figure out which details are essential to the documentary and which aren't. |
